ABC Testing!

We are proud to offer a way for you to determine how your body is functioning utilizing ABC or Advanced Body Chemistry testing. The ABC test checks 11 key Biomarkers, uncluding PH, Oxidative Stress, Electrolytes, Cellular Respiration, etc and will inform you how much stress is on your Adrenal Glands, Kidneys, Liver, etc.

In this way you can prevent future problems and reverse the problems you already have. This testing is perticularly good for those suffering with morning stiffness, headaches, tiredness, weight gain, digestive disorders or folks who just plain feel out of whack.

This testing is also essential in determining what nutrients, supplements and specific foods you need to bring your body chemistry back into balance. Once a baseline value is established, re-checks can be performed to monitor progress and in this way, guesswork is reduced to a minimum. Most patients receive about a 5 to 8 page report of findings.

The price for the testing is $149 and includes the report of findings. For more information, please feel free to email me at drstevensaul@gmail.com

New Drug Information/Cholesterol

This month we will focus on Cholesterol lowering medicines and suggest natural alternatives to statin drugs. If you are too busy to read this entire article and have high cholesterol, call me for a cost free phone consultation. Dr. Saul

Are prescription medicines over utilized? Here are a few facts. In 2006, there were 275 billion in sales of drugs and at least 45 percent of Americans take at least one prescription drug on a daily basis. Five out of six elderly or 83 percent take one prescription or more on a daily basis.

IN 2004 1.6 million teenagers and children were prescribed at least two psychiatric drugs in combination.

Lipitor TM ads state that there is a 36 percent reduction in the risk of Heart Attack (compared with placebo). This sounds great until you read between the lines and understand that the placebo group had a 2 percent reduction of Heart Attack compared with 3 percent on Lipitor. This is actually a 1 percent absolute risk reduction!! Considering the cost at about 140/month or 1680/year, is one percent really worth it? Consider the side effects as well. Elevated cancer rates, bone and muscle pain, toxicity of the central nervous system. chest pain, nausea, bronchitis, insomnia, dizziness, urinary tract infection and more.

Furthermore, statin drugs like Lipitor reduce the delivery of Coenzyme  Q-10 which is absolutely necessary for good cardiovascular health. In addition,  Cholesterol is good! Yes..you heard correctly..in fact it is essential.....you need cholesterol as a precursor to vitamin D production in the skin. It is necessary for fat and mineral production. It forms the myelin sheath around the nerves, helps serotonin receptors function properly as well as the adrenal hormones and is important for the optimal function of the immune system!

There are better and safer ways to treat high cholesterol than medicine which include the use of Niacin, Fish oils and increasing your fiber intake. Lets look at these supplement individually.

Niacin (in PCOH-plus...see below)  will increase HDL by 20-35 percent, decrease LDL by 5 to 25 percent, decrease tryglycerides by 30 percent and VLDL as well. Niacin is also very inexpensive.

To avoid the “Niacin flush” from standard Nicain supplements you can initially take it with aspirin and taper over two weeks. No flush Niacin should be avoided in favor of slow release niacin.

The health benefits of fish oil include its ability to aid in heart diseases, high cholesterol, weight loss, depression, anxiety, AHDH, immunity, cancer, pregnancy, diabetes, inflammation, arthritis, IBD, AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, eye disorders, macular degeneration, skin care, psoriasis, acne, ulcers, fertility, etc.

Fiber is important to colon health and is able to pull fats from the bloodstream aiding to help lower elevated cholesterol levels. Avoid fiber products that contain sugar.

PCOH-Plus is a new product that we are going to have available that utilizes Policosanol from sugar cane, which is the source supported by clinical research, and emulsified CoQ10, which has been shown to be better absorbed that the most commonly used form. Some so-called "policosanols", are isolated from beeswax and rice bran. These extracts have even been shown in clinical trials to provide the health benefits of policosanol derived from sugar cane. Why the confusion? The term "policosanols" generally means a group of, or many cosanols. However, the term was originally given to the isolate from sugar cane, which has as its main component, Octacosanol. On the other hand, so-called policosanols from beeswax consists mostly of other alcohols, as is the case with rice bran extracts. Policosanols from sugar cane has been well studied and proven safe and effective. The results have been published in high quality, peer review journals such as the American Heart Journal, International Journal of Clinical Pharmacology Research, and Diabetes Care.

Dietary changes to eliminate or significantly reduce hydrogenated fats, refined carbohydrates, dairy products, gluten containing grains and alcohol should also be initiated along with an increase in exercise.
  60 capsules:

Niacin (as inosital hexaniacinate) 250 mg
Policosanol (from sugar cane) 10 mg
CoQ10 (emulsified for greater uptake and utilization) 2.5 mg
Superoxide Dismutase (from vegetable source) 15 mcg
Catalase 15 mcg

If you have been diagnosed with high cholesterol, feel free to call and discuss modern natural alternatives.

Next month we will discuss Osteoporosis, and how to prevent it.

Hang in there.

Choose Your Multivitamins Carefully
How do you choose to purchase your vitamins and other supplements? Does convenience and price dictate what vitamin brands end up on your countertop? A recent report released by ConsumerLab.com contains some alarming news about the safety and accuracy of multivitamins available for purchase at your local nutrition / grocery stores. What they found is that more than 30 percent of the multivitamins tested contained too much or too little of certain ingredients as listed on the label and/or were contaminated with lead. Too much folic acid increases the risk of prostate cancer in men, too much vitamin A can cause nausea, blurred vision and liver problems, and, high levels of zinc can lead to anemia and immune deficiencies. All of these problems and many more including lead contamination were found in ConsumerLab.com's testing. In fact, a particular vitamin water product tested at 15 times its stated level of folic acid - not necessarily good for those concerned about their prostate health.

Go Organic
There are a number of benefits to buying organic including the absence of harmful herbicides and pesticides. Exposure to these chemicals are not only harmful, they can be deadly. According to a new report in the International Journal of Cancer, a study on 20,000 workers exposed to the crop herbicide imazethapyr found 3,000 or 15 percent of the workers later developed cancers. It's hard to say exactly how harmful these chemicals are to those of us who eat produce grown in fields where herbicides and pesticides are used, but based on these findings, we'd much rather be safe than be sorry. How about you?

Medical Errors Still Plaguing Hospitals
The primary purpose of hospitals is to provide a safe environment where the sick and injured go to get well. However, medical errors in hospitals account for a staggering number of preventable deaths and the numbers don't seem to be improving. According to the sixth annual patient safety study conducted by HealthGrades, a healthcare assessment organization, preventable medical errors cost Medicare over $6.9 billion and caused more than 92,000 in-hospital deaths among Medicare beneficiaries between 2005 and 2007. Out of the approximately 38 million Medicare hospital admissions, more than 913,000 medical mistakes occurred. What's worse is of those mistakes, one in ten resulted in death. The good news, if there is any, is that Medicare patients had a 43 percent less likelihood of experiencing a medical error at award winning hospitals. Thus, it's pays to research your local hospitals before you become sick or injured. Visit http://www.healthgrades.com to research hospitals.

Mental Decline Starts Earlier Than First Thought
Experts used to believe that mental decline was something exclusive to the elderly and aging. New research now shows certain brain function begins to deteriorate much sooner - in the late 20s and 30s. Those brain functions susceptible to early deterioration included mental speed, problem solving and abstract reasoning. However, things such as vocabulary and general knowledge improved with age due to the accumulation of knowledge that occurs over the years. The new findings allow researchers to better study cognitive changes as we age and help to potentially discover ways to slow the deterioration as well as better predict the onset of dementias including Alzheimer's Disease.
