THE IMPORTANCE OF ELECTROLYTES

This month we discuss the importance of Electrolytes. This is the 3rd key biomarker of the ABC test that we now have available in our office.

Electrolyte imbalances can increase problems with dehydration and exacerbate problems with your heart and nervous system. Why? Because, your body is electric. On the smallest levels, your body passes fluids via osmosis (passage of fluids through semi-permeable membranes) by attracting positive molecules to negative molecules. Your body has a North and South pole just like the earth!

Without the essential conductive materials (electro-lytes), your muscles don't funtiona t optimal levels, including the most important one, your heart!

If you are low in electrolytes, trace minerals and good salt, like Celtic Sea salt can help! I do not support the use of commonly sold "ade" type drinks loaded with sugar and chemicals. Make your own with real fresh lime and lemon and add some good Celtic Sea Salt. Next month we will go into the importance of good salt and why the regular salt you and I were brought up on deserves the bad reputation is has gotten. Use only Celtic Sea salt or Real Salt. As always, just call me or email me if you have any questions or comments.

Happy Summertime!

OXIDATION-REDUCTION

This month we will investigate the relationship of oxidation-reduction.

Cut an apple and it turns brown. This is oxidation.

Ultimately, energy is the exchange of electrons. You either gain them or lose (use) them. When you (your atoms) gain an electron this is referred to as reduction. When you lose or use an electron this is called oxidation. You may have heard someone say "you need antioxidants!" Let us explure why you may need them.

An antioxidant is a molecule capable of slowing or preventing the oxidation of other molecules.  Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals, which start chain reactions that damage cells.  Although oxidation reactions are crucial for life, they can also be damaging; hence, plants  and animals maintain complex systems of multiple types of antioxidants, such as glutathione,  vitamin C, and vitamin E  as well as enzymes such as catalase, superoxide dismutase and various peroxidases.

We know that animals that have higher oxidative stress age faster. Oxidation will be increased due to exposure to toxins, inflammation, exercise, tumors and decreased pH. The effects of oxidation will be a compromised immune system, protein damage, damage to the cell membranes, mitochondrial dysfunction and damage to DNA.

Has it become obvious why it is so important to check the status of this essential biochemical function. The ABC test will tell you if you are have the right biochemical balance. http://www.advancedbodychemistry.com

WHY DO I NEED ALKALINE RESERVES

Hello. My name is Dr. Steven Saul and I have been practicing Chiropractic for almost the last 30 years. One of the major underpinnings of the Chiropractic philosophy is that the body will get better if you can improve its normal functioning. We don't aim to mask symptoms…our aim is to balance the body, physically, nutritionally and mentally.

These physical , nutritional and mental components of health are the essential pieces of what we refer to as the Health Triad.

My practice is designed to handle the physical and nutritional components of well being.

 MENTAL/EMOTIONAL/SPRITUAL

For the emotional side, any recurring issues are referred out to mental health professionals. I am a person who totally supports the benefits of  talk therapy. I think its important for long term benefits to not just mask the symptoms of mental or emotional distress with potentially addictive and or toxic medications. Yes…good perhaps for short term, but its best to get off these medications as soon as possible.

Are there people who will need ongoing medication? Yes, of course. But far too many people are using medication as a replacement for  the hard work that often accompanies mental and spiritual healing.

 PHYSICAL/STRUCTURAL

Our structural corrective work follows the same philosophy. If your car is out of alignment, you will wear out your tires sooner. It's the same with the body. If your body is in the proper alignment, it will function better. We improve health by improving function instead of masking the symptoms. If you have had injuries, these may show up much later in life than you would have imagined. I see patients 25 or 30 years after car accidents that didn't even know they were injured. Its much better to maintain good shape, than try to fix something after it has been damaged by years of neglect.

 NUTRITIONAL

For the next few months,  I will be focusing on the nutritional component of the health triad. The nutritional side of the triad includes, food, drugs, hormones, fluid intake, digestion….in other words it is that scientific and yet magical process whereby food is turned into energy and then eliminated as waste.

LET ME SHARE WITH YOU A GREAT WAY TO DETERMINE YOUR NUTRITIONAL NEEDS

It's called the ABC test. The ABC or Advanced Body Chemistry test is available in our office. The ABC test checks 11 key biomarkers, including Alkaline reserves, PH, Oxidative Stress, Electrolytes, Hydration and more. This test analyzes urine and saliva.

WHY DO I NEED ALKALINE RESERVES?

Your body is always needing to digest foods and all foods leave either an acid or alkaline residue. If the food leaves an acid residue, it must be combined with an alkali to be eliminated. If your alkaline reserves from food are low, your body will pull alkalinity from the Gall Bladder Bile, Pancreatic Fluids and eventually it will begin to mine the most abundant alkaline mineral in the body…CALCIUM! This will lead to early arthritic symptoms at any post injury sites where this is restricted motion. This is why many people have spurs in their neck following an injury. This lack of alkalinity will also cause digestive problems for the reasons already mentioned.

 WHAT TO DO?

Our diet should be 70 to 80 percent fruits and vegetables. For most of us, it is the other way around. So make sure you eat a least one piece of fruit every day. Make sure you eat a fresh salad every day. Make sure you eat your vegetables. If you can't get enough there is a supplement we carry at the clinic called Nitro Greens. It will help alkalinize the body by supplying nutrients from Heirloom fruits and vegetables.

Lastly, keep in mind that Coffee, Soft drinks, exposure to cigarette smoke and alcohol will raise the acidity levels in your body. In addition long term fungal, viral or bacterial infections as well as parasitic infections may add to this burden.

Next month we will focus on Oxidative Stress/Free Radical Damage and what you can do to prevent this.

Blessings upon your house!

ABC Testing!

We are proud to offer a way for you to determine how your body is functioning utilizing ABC or Advanced Body Chemistry testing. The ABC test checks 11 key Biomarkers, uncluding PH, Oxidative Stress, Electrolytes, Cellular Respiration, etc and will inform you how much stress is on your Adrenal Glands, Kidneys, Liver, etc.

In this way you can prevent future problems and reverse the problems you already have. This testing is perticularly good for those suffering with morning stiffness, headaches, tiredness, weight gain, digestive disorders or folks who just plain feel out of whack.

This testing is also essential in determining what nutrients, supplements and specific foods you need to bring your body chemistry back into balance. Once a baseline value is established, re-checks can be performed to monitor progress and in this way, guesswork is reduced to a minimum. Most patients receive about a 5 to 8 page report of findings.

The price for the testing is $149 and includes the report of findings. For more information, please feel free to email me at drstevensaul@gmail.com

New Drug Information/Cholesterol

This month we will focus on Cholesterol lowering medicines and suggest natural alternatives to statin drugs. If you are too busy to read this entire article and have high cholesterol, call me for a cost free phone consultation. Dr. Saul

Are prescription medicines over utilized? Here are a few facts. In 2006, there were 275 billion in sales of drugs and at least 45 percent of Americans take at least one prescription drug on a daily basis. Five out of six elderly or 83 percent take one prescription or more on a daily basis.

IN 2004 1.6 million teenagers and children were prescribed at least two psychiatric drugs in combination.

Lipitor TM ads state that there is a 36 percent reduction in the risk of Heart Attack (compared with placebo). This sounds great until you read between the lines and understand that the placebo group had a 2 percent reduction of Heart Attack compared with 3 percent on Lipitor. This is actually a 1 percent absolute risk reduction!! Considering the cost at about 140/month or 1680/year, is one percent really worth it? Consider the side effects as well. Elevated cancer rates, bone and muscle pain, toxicity of the central nervous system. chest pain, nausea, bronchitis, insomnia, dizziness, urinary tract infection and more.

Furthermore, statin drugs like Lipitor reduce the delivery of Coenzyme  Q-10 which is absolutely necessary for good cardiovascular health. In addition,  Cholesterol is good! Yes..you heard correctly..in fact it is essential.....you need cholesterol as a precursor to vitamin D production in the skin. It is necessary for fat and mineral production. It forms the myelin sheath around the nerves, helps serotonin receptors function properly as well as the adrenal hormones and is important for the optimal function of the immune system!

There are better and safer ways to treat high cholesterol than medicine which include the use of Niacin, Fish oils and increasing your fiber intake. Lets look at these supplement individually.

Niacin (in PCOH-plus...see below)  will increase HDL by 20-35 percent, decrease LDL by 5 to 25 percent, decrease tryglycerides by 30 percent and VLDL as well. Niacin is also very inexpensive.

To avoid the “Niacin flush” from standard Nicain supplements you can initially take it with aspirin and taper over two weeks. No flush Niacin should be avoided in favor of slow release niacin.

The health benefits of fish oil include its ability to aid in heart diseases, high cholesterol, weight loss, depression, anxiety, AHDH, immunity, cancer, pregnancy, diabetes, inflammation, arthritis, IBD, AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, eye disorders, macular degeneration, skin care, psoriasis, acne, ulcers, fertility, etc.

Fiber is important to colon health and is able to pull fats from the bloodstream aiding to help lower elevated cholesterol levels. Avoid fiber products that contain sugar.

PCOH-Plus is a new product that we are going to have available that utilizes Policosanol from sugar cane, which is the source supported by clinical research, and emulsified CoQ10, which has been shown to be better absorbed that the most commonly used form. Some so-called "policosanols", are isolated from beeswax and rice bran. These extracts have even been shown in clinical trials to provide the health benefits of policosanol derived from sugar cane. Why the confusion? The term "policosanols" generally means a group of, or many cosanols. However, the term was originally given to the isolate from sugar cane, which has as its main component, Octacosanol. On the other hand, so-called policosanols from beeswax consists mostly of other alcohols, as is the case with rice bran extracts. Policosanols from sugar cane has been well studied and proven safe and effective. The results have been published in high quality, peer review journals such as the American Heart Journal, International Journal of Clinical Pharmacology Research, and Diabetes Care.

Dietary changes to eliminate or significantly reduce hydrogenated fats, refined carbohydrates, dairy products, gluten containing grains and alcohol should also be initiated along with an increase in exercise.
  60 capsules:

Niacin (as inosital hexaniacinate) 250 mg
Policosanol (from sugar cane) 10 mg
CoQ10 (emulsified for greater uptake and utilization) 2.5 mg
Superoxide Dismutase (from vegetable source) 15 mcg
Catalase 15 mcg

If you have been diagnosed with high cholesterol, feel free to call and discuss modern natural alternatives.

Next month we will discuss Osteoporosis, and how to prevent it.

Hang in there.

Chiropractic Spinal Manipulation Effective In The Elderly As Well

Although chiropractic care has helped countless millions of patients of all ages, research studies have been primarily focused on those under the age of 55 years of age. In a new study, researchers evaluated the success of chiropractic care versus conservative medical care on 240 adults with an average age of 63 years who were suffering from subacute and chronic low back pain. Results of six weeks of either chiropractic care or minimal conservative medical care were compared via study participant completed disability-related questionnaires (measuring each participants overall function) at 3, 6, 12 and 24 weeks. Researchers found those receiving chiropractic care had significant improvements in their functional status as compared with those receiving medical care. Researchers also found that no serious adverse events were associated with chiropractic care. For those elderly adults who were under the impression that safe, natural and effective chiropractic care was only for infants, children and younger adults, we hope this clears up any misconceptions. If you or another maturing individual are suffering from health problems or would like to be professionally evaluated by a doctor of chiropractic, please don’t continue to wait - take that first important step by calling our offices today!

Common Spine Surgery As Effective As No Surgery At All

Close to 40,000 costly spinal surgeries referred to as vertebroplasty are performed each year in the United States. However, shocking new research may change that number. Published in the prestigious The New England Journal of Medicine, a new study indicates that vertebroplasty is as effective as performing a fake surgery. Vertebroplasty is a surgical procedure where the surgeon injects a cement-like substance into a fractured vertebrae for the purpose of providing vertebral strength and reducing the associated pain. According to Rachelle Buchbinder of Monash University in Malvern, Australia, whose group found that 36 volunteers who received sham surgery did just as well as 35 who got the real operation, "We had hoped this treatment might get the pain better quicker, but we couldn't demonstrate that… I don't think there's any place for vertebroplasty at the moment." According to Dr. James Weinstein of Dartmouth Medical School in New Hampshire, "The results may change vertebroplasty from a procedure that is virtually always considered to be successful to one that is considered no better than placebo." While it is not our intent to bash the medical profession, we feel the findings of this study and the comments of the physicians involved with this study are extremely newsworthy and should be made available to anyone considering spinal surgery.

Smoking Reduces Mobility In Upper Spine

A recent study published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine has found the motion between vertebrae of the upper spine area (thoracic spine) in smokers is significantly reduced as compared to that of non-smokers. Smooth full range of motion between the vertebrae that make up the spine is essential not only for optimal trunk movement, but also for providing nourishment to the joints of spine. As the spinal vertebrae lose their natural full range of motion and thus their nutrition, spinal motion decreases and stiffness and spinal degeneration increases. Smoking also reduces the amount of oxygen the tissues of the body receive including those tissues of the spine. In effect, those who smoke are at even greater risk for spinal abnormalities, degeneration, stiffness, loss of motion and ultimately pain. If you or someone you know is suffering from back and/or neck (spinal) problems, especially if they smoke, have them call our offices today. Chiropractors are highly trained in conditions of the spine as well as conditions that affect the spine.

Chiropractic Care To Be A Standard Benefit For Active Duty Military Personnel

The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a directive that orders the Pentagon to make chiropractic care a standard benefit for all active duty military personnel.  The legislation is contained in HR 2647, a bill authorizing defense programs in fiscal year 2010, and is based in part on recommendations from the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) and the Association of Chiropractic Colleges (ACC).

The bill - passed by the full House on June 25 - also contains language allowing for chiropractic demonstration projects at overseas military locations and clarifies that chiropractic care at U.S. military facilities is to be performed only by a doctor of chiropractic.

"When signed into law, this legislation will pave the way for expanded access within the military health care system to the critical services offered by doctors of chiropractic—both stateside and overseas," said ACA President Glenn Manceaux, DC. "ACA leaders are dedicated to this effort and will settle for nothing less than full access to chiropractic."

In 2008, the House passed similar language in the form of HR 5658; however, that provision was not included in the Senate version of the bill.

"I would like to thank House Armed Services Committee Chairman Ike Skelton, D-Mo.; Ranking Member Buck McKeon, R-Calif.; Rep. Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawaii; and Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Ala. for their support and for shepherding this language through the legislative process," Manceaux added.

To date, there is a doctor of chiropractic at 49 military bases around the country; however, according to a 2005 Government Accountability Office report, only 54 percent of servicemen and women eligible for chiropractic care can reasonably access the benefit.

This latest development comes on the heels of an announcement by TRICARE that beginning this fall, 11 additional military hospitals and clinics will provide access to chiropractic services for active duty military members, including facilities in Germany and Okinawa, Japan.

The Senate is expected to take up the legislation in the near future.  Watch ACA's Web site and publications for more details as they become available.
